A Study Guide for Judith Ortiz Cofer's "Catch the Moon"
By Gale and Cengage. Puerto Rican American author Judith Ortiz Cofer was an author of poetry, fiction, and essays that especially delve into aspects of intercultural lives, in which life and family transcend languages and national borders. She wrote a number of short stories featuring teenage protagonists and perspectives, including Catch the Moon. Protagonist Luis is a young man with whom many readers will identify: his mind is actively engaged, if not exactly in the ways authority figures want it to be engaged, which sometimes leads him into trouble. Naomi is also a young woman who easily evokes readers' empathy, as she shows due concern for appearances, but the true heart of her personality is her art. These two young people cross paths in, of all places, an automotive junkyard, where Luis needs to come and where Naomi comes to find something she needs.
