We work hand in hand with Dutch breeders to choose new varieties which excel because of their color, productivity and flower structure in order to have a more innovative portfolio for our clients. The uniformity in plant development is taken into account before planting so there will be a more homogeneous crop. The preparation and oxygenation of soil is fundamental for the healthy growth of plants. A support structure is used to guide the young plants which prevents the growth of crooked stems. The flowers are picked stem by stem and harvested according to each client's specifications regarding grade and cut stage.

Although it is the fifth most exported cut flower in Colombia no genetic breeding programs of Alstroemeria have been developed in this country. This situation has lead to the cultivation of hybrids developed by European breeders.

This investigation aimed at studying the feasibility of using Bomarea caldasiana, a wild plant with a high diversity of shapes and colors, relative to Alstroemeria and broad distribution in Colombia, as a parent in the production of new genotypes.

For this purpose, the combinatory ability of B. Once pollinated, growth of ovaries was observed; cv. Alstroemeria x Bomarea produced more consistent results than the reciprocal cross. The development of an embryo was determined and the events related to embryo abortion and ovular collapse, typical of interspecific crosses, were followed through a histological study of the ovules.

The histological studies confirmed the formation of embryos, which is necessary to regenerate plantlets from the crosses and thus the feasibility of the genus Bomarea as parent was proved. The histological study showed that the ovules of both crosses were viable up to seven days after pollination DAP , but 14 DAP a degradation of the nucellus occurred and the contact between embryo and embryo-sac was lost, which resulted in a collapse of the ovule at 28 DAP.

Also a failure in cellularization of the endosperm and a gap between embryo and embryo-sac was observed. The ovule collapse prevents the formation of seeds and therefore an in vitro culture of the ovules from both crosses was made in order to rescue embryos. Different culture media were used, but no germination of embryos was obtained in vitro.

The development of oxidation-related events in the explants was observed, which were more evident in Bomarea x Alstroemeria. Ascorbic and citric acid showed to promote growth and color on Alstroemeria x Bomarea and a concentration of 0. The importance of the genus Bomarea can be considered for the introduction of new genes that would allow to broaden the genetic basis of Alstroemeria.
