Still a good book 4 stars View 1 comment. Marcos, a political activist, escapes Mexico City just ahead of federal agents out to arrest him and his compatriots.
He heads for the countryside and his uncle Ramon's estate where he plans both to hide out and scam his uncle out of enough money to disappear with his girlfriend. Only his uncle is in poor health and Marcos' cousins are hovering and maneuvering to get their inheritance and thus perceive Marcos arrival as a threat. So that is game on. The structure of this novel is quite unique.
Th Marcos, a political activist, escapes Mexico City just ahead of federal agents out to arrest him and his compatriots. The first two thirds are narrated in first-person by Marcos. And then there is Part Two, in which we have a new first-person narrator, Pepe Lara, Ramon's best friend, who, as he says at the start of this part of the novel, has become a detective. In the Marcos section we meet all the characters and the plot unfolds to the denouement. And then with the switch in narrators the plot takes a decisive turn and the novel becomes a detective story to its surprising conclusion.
I read this in translation english and can't vouch for that, but it was an entertaining read with a compelling plot, fully realized characters, and some delicious dark humor.
Aug 21, Rebecca rated it it was amazing. I just loved this book. It was funny and serious and suspenseful and surprising all at the same time: farcical but with real, disturbing danger lurking beneath the slammed doors and wry observations. The ending was both satisfying and ambiguous, and I would love to discuss it I have no idea if one can even find this book in English, let alone if it would be any good in translation, but if any of my friends ever reads it please let me know!

The only thing that felt too contrived was the sudden change of narrator, even though it was necessary for the story. The acceleration of the last third of the book was abrupt, but, combined with the humor which is an important element , it made the book better.
