The book features the recurring character of Colonel Race for the last time and was an expansion of a Hercule Poirot short story entitled Yellow Iris which had previously been published in issue of the Strand Magazine in July and in book form in The Regatta Mystery and Other Stories in the US in The full-length novel omits the character of Poirot, substituting Colonel Race as the central investigative character instead. The novel uses the basics of the short story, including the method of the poisoning, but changes the identity of the culprit s - not for the first time, when Agatha Christie rewrote her own work. One year ago on 2 November, six people sat down to dinner at the restaurant "Luxembourg".

It begins with six characters recalling the horrific death of Rosemary Barton, a beautiful but shallow young heiress poisoned by a cyanide-spiked glass of champagne whilst celebrating her birthday at a smart London restaurant. During the First World War she worked as a hospital dispenser, and it was here that she gleaned the working knowledge of various poisons that was to prove so useful in her detective stories.
This was published in although in fact she had written it during the war and was followed over the next six years by four more detective novels and a short story collection. This novel, with its complex plot and genuinely shocking conclusion, attracted considerable public attention and has since been acknowledged by many experts as a masterpiece. In the sharp-witted spinster sleuth Miss Marple made her first appearance in The Murder at the Vicarage.
In all, Agatha Christie published over 80 novels and short story collections. In she was one of a number of crime writers asked to contribute a chapter to a mystery, Behind the Screen, that was broadcast on BBC radio on 21st June that year.
